Our Mission

The Eager Free Public Library opens doors for curious minds by encouraging literacy, inspiring learning, and connecting people.

History of EFPL

  • 1899: The City of Evansville formed a public library in 1899 and temporarily housed it in the high school building.

  • 1902: Almeron Eager bequeathed $10,000 to the city for a public library.
Mrs. Almeron Eager and her daughter later contributed an additional $15,907 to complete the project.

  • 1903: Flora Winston donated the lot on the corner of First St. and Main to the city for the library.

  • 1908: The library was officially dedicated on June 9

  • 1978: The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places–a fine example of the Prairie School architectural style and the earliest existing example of Claude and Starck’s “Sullivanesque” libraries in Wisconsin.

  • 1996: The first addition was completed–doubling the size of the library with a new entrance on First Street, wiring for a computer network, and an elevator to make both levels ADA accessible

  • 2019: Second addition and renovation completed increasing the size of the building.
