Free Online Courses Now Available in Rock County

Gale Courses: https://education.gale.com/l-arrowhead/

Arrowhead Library System is offering cardholders of its seven public libraries a new avenue to access lifelong learning opportunities in the form of professional development, technology and personal enrichment classes through Gale Courses. Patrons of ALS's seven public libraries now have access to more than 365 engaging, online, instructor-led courses covering a wide variety of topics such as test preparation for ACT/SAT, GED, and LSAT; introduction to SQL, WordPress websites, gardening, and so much more. Some courses are accredited by national organizations as continuing education credits.

Gale Courses provides six-week long online programs taught by college instructors who are experts in their field. Sessions start fresh monthly so there's never a long wait to get started. Many of the classes offered are tied to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' fastest-growing occupations, positioning our libraries to drive local economic development and meet demand for the top workplace skills.

More information will be sent to ALS libraries next week, and promotion of these services will begin in February. Take a peek at Gale Courses' ALS page now. Staff and patrons may begin enroll now! You can enroll several months before a session begins or at any point during the 13-day grace period following the start of a session. All students, regardless of sign-up date, must click into lessons one and two by midnight on the last day of the grace period or they will be dropped from the class.

SHARE MIGRATION UPDATES

New System Up and Running

January 11, 2018 - Migration to the SHARE catalog was completed on schedule, if not early, and with few hiccups. Staff are becoming more confident with each interaction using the new ILS, SirsiDynix Symphony and WorkFlows. Patrons seem to be enjoying the new catalog as well. In addition to what patrons are saying at their own libraries, ALS has received several complimentary communications at the system office.

Consortium members saw an initial spike in inter-system lending within SHARE, which has since begun to level. Bibliographic records will be de-duplicated over the next few weeks further reducing delivery volume. In the meantime, ALS continues to evolve and fine tune its transit and delivery procedures.

Group Training: "Statistics, Lists, and Other Reports"

There will be an in-person training session dedicated to statistics, lists and other reports. Be sure to sign up all staff members and their backups involved in pulling reports and statistics.

Sign up for this training session using this Google doc.
